Nelson is starting his 27th year at Sumter High
School. He was named the 2001 South Carolina
Athletic Coaches Association Athletic Trainer of
the Year. Nelson has served as trainer for both
the North-South All Star Football Game, the
Shrine bowl, and as Vice-President
of the South Carolina Athletic Trainers
Association. Nelson also has previous
experience with the Atlanta Falcons and was an
assistant Athletic Trainer at Clemson
University. He received his B.S. from East
Tennessee State University and his M.A. from
Furman University. Gary and his wife,
Karen, have two children, Michael is a graduate
of
Presbyterian College and Jennifer a sophomore at
Wingate University.
Stacie Brown, AT, SCAT, MAT Assistant Athletic Trainer
Stacie Brown is a
native of Sumter, SC. She attended the
University of South Carolina for both her
Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and
Master of Art in Teaching. While attending
Sumter High School, she was a student athletic
trainer for four years. While in college,
she worked as a student athletic trainer at
Dutch Fork High School, Ridge View High School,
Hammond School, USC Baseball, USC Football and
Lexington Medical Center Physical Therapy.
Stacie was the Assistant Athletic Trainer at
Gilbert High School and the Head Athletic
Trainer at Camden High School. Stacie
teaches 6th grade Physical Education and Health
at Bates Middle School.
Mark Mitchiner,
M.D. Team Physician
Dr. Mitchiner was
born in Louisville, KY, and was raised in
Houston, TX. He attended Duke University
as an undergraduate, receiving a Bachelor of
Science in Zoology. He then attended the
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
where he received his Medical Degree.
Thereafter, he completed pediatric residency at
the Medical University of South Carolina.
A year of Chief Residency followed at MUSC.
He completed a fellowship in Primary Care
Pediatric Sports Medicine at the Children's
Medical Center of Akron. He and his wife
Diane live in Sumter. He practices at
Sumter Pediatrics.
Mitch Grunsky, M.D. Team
Physician
Dr. Grunsky was
born in Lexington, SC and graduated from
Lexington High School. He attended the
College of Charleston followed by the Medical
University of South Carolina where he received
his Medical Degree. He served as Chief
Resident at Northeast Medical Center in Concord,
NC. He enjoys attending USC sporting events,
waterskiing, and target shooting. He and
his wife Nicole reside in Sumter. He
practices at Colonial Family Practice and also
serves as one of the team physicians for the USC
Sumter baseball, softball, and soccer teams.
Kurt Stroebel, M.D.
Team Orthopaedic
Dr. Stroebel was born in Columbus, OH.
He attended Bowling Green State
University followed by the Ohio State
University College of Medicine. He
completed both his Internship and
Residency at the University of
Louisville Affiliated Hospitals.
Stroebel did a Fellowship in Sports
Medicine at the University of
Alabama-Birmingham and now practices at
Sumter Orthopaedics in Sumter.He and his
wife Nina have two children, Max and
Cori.
