The Sumter High School varsity softball team scored eight runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 10-5 victory over South Florence on Friday at the SHS field.
The Lady Gamecocks, who improved to 15-8-1 on the season and 5-4 in Region VI-4A. scored four runs in each of the first two innings. After South Florence cut the lead to 8-5, SHS scored two runs in the fifth.
Sumter had 11 hits, led by Catherine Ortmann, who was 2-for-2 with four runs batted in. Taylor Preston was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sutton Watson picked up the victory, striking out 11 and walking one while giving up 10 hits.
South Florence fell to 18-4 and 7-2.
